Post-Operative Instructions

What is normal?

It is normal to experience an increase in pain and swelling for two-to-three days after surgery.  Beginning on the fourth day, things should begin to improve.  Bleeding is usually controlled within the first eight (8) hours after surgery, as long as you follow the instructions to control bleeding; that is, to apply constant, firm pressure over the bleeding site, and to repeat as needed.

Regarding general activities, it is best to be as patient as possible.  As a general rule, you should use the same criteria for activities you would use if you had a cold.  That is, if you feel bad, stay home and rest.  If you feel "ok," then it is probably "ok" to resume normal activities, while keeping in mind that you just had surgery.  If you are having to take the stronger pain medication, you should stay home.
